tonight on news4. there was a historic moment at last night's dnc gathering. san antonio mayor castro became the first latino ever to deliver the key note address at a democratic national convention. castro told the crowd that our country's economy is on the road to recovery thanks to president obama. >> four years ago america stood on the brink of a depression, despite incredible odds and united republican opposition, our president took action and now we've seen 4.5 million new jobs. he knows better than anyone that there's more hard work to do, but we're making progress and now we need to make a choice. it's a choice between a country where the middle class pays more so the millionaires can pay lessor a country where everybody pays their fair share so we can reduce the deficit and create the jobs of the future. >> castro's twin brother you see

there introduced him last night. he is also a candidate for congress from texas. out of the balconiebalconie the streets. out of the balconiebalconies, i streets. >> the dnc is attracting protesters to charlotte. police detained demonstrators last night on the convention's opening day. the protesters are fighting for a number of causes, including immigration reform and affordable health care for veterans. the protests were peaceful for the most part yesterday. both parties fight over what's best for our economy, the nation's debt has passed a his or rick milestone. the treasury department says the national debt has gone above $16 trillion for the first time. republicans are blaming democrats, especially president obama, for letting the debt reach that level. in the day ahead, washington's airports authority will try to repair their image with new ethics rule. the group which is overseeing the metro silver line project has faced stiff scrutiny after a

report detailed lav vir travel spending and questionable contracts. today they hope to make those things a thing of the past with new limits on what members can spend on plane tickets and meals and new rules on disclosing conflicts of interests so that corrects are not handed out to former board members. a figure skating coach who competed in the 1988 olympic in calgary is behind bars in maryland. news4 spoke exclusively to his lawyer about the charges. 50-year-old gingrich teaches at the garden icehouse in laurel. new york police are not releasing a lot of details but they say the charges stem from an incident in lake placid last september. the city is a mecca for figure skating training and competitions. his lawyer tells us her client is facing sexual abuse charges. he will be held in the howard county jail until extradition hearing today. right now alexandria police are asking for your help to find a missing elderly man. david short suffers from

well, you won't find big macs and quarter pounders at a new mcdonald's restaurants. the biggest hamburger chain plans to open all vegetarian locations in india. mcdonald's says the menu there will cater to local tastes. it already separates its kitchens in india into vegetarian and nonvegetarian sections and does not sell beef or pork. they did not say when they will open or i guess what exactly they might serve.

story from the newsroom. angie, good morning. >> eun, he opened fire in a room filled with hundreds wearing a mask and dressed in a bathrobe. right now one person is dead and a these are in the hospital. the new premier pauline marois was giving a victory speech when shots were fired. she was whisked away and not hurt. one person died and another was wounded after a gunman started shooting from the back of the auditorium. police captured the man. they say he's 50 years old but would not comment on the weapon. cameras at the event show a pistol and a rifle at the scene. now, still unclear why he did it. police don't know if marios was the direct target but becodo know the attack happened right after marios started speaking in english which is rare in an event like this. they want independence from canada and as the suspect was being driven away by police he shouted in french, the english are waking up. tensions between the french and english in quebec has proved

violent before. reporting live in the newsroom, angie goff, news4. 5:17. a former susan g. komen for the cure insider is out with a scathing account of the charity's decision to stop grants to planned parenthood. karen handel's planned bullyhood is due out next tuesday. she resigned earlier this year. her book depicts planned parenthood as a partisan organization that tried to weakweak en komen for its own agenda. handel describes the leadership as indecisive and politically naive. komen cut off grants but reversed decision after public backlash. handel called that decision to backtrack a mistake. military's elite is getting a tern warning as the book is released about a raid on osama bin laden. naif commander sent a letter to all the special operations community and warned them not to

reveal details of missions. the letter comes as the pentagon looks at legal action against the man who wrote the book "no easy day". the author claims to have detailed the raid that killed osama bin laden last year. they say the book reveals sensitive and classified information after the s.e.a.l. signed a nondisclosure agreement with the military. a hazing ritual has led to a career-ending punishment for army sergeant. disturbing video posted online shows him swinging a wooden mallet at a lower rank soldier. that soldier fell against a wall but hit his head on a chair. his father said the soldier also suffered a seizure. this happened in ft. bragg in april during an unsanctioned promotion ceremony. the sergeant has been relieved of his roles and responsibilities. if you hear helicopters buzzing your house ooze you get ready for work this week, don't be alarmed. norad is conducting exercises over d.c. region this week. the first will end in about 15

minutes or a little less than that. a flights will continue each night through friday between 11:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. and again between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. the civil air patrol and u.s. coast guard are also taking part. in this video is angering travelers. it shows tsa agents screening passenger's drinks even after they passed through security. the person who uploaded the video to youtube said it was shot on the concourse of the columbus, ohio, airport over the weekend. one traveler who saw it happen says it was excessive. >> having someone come up to me and demand that i submit to another search without really any probable cause seems a bit much. >> the tsa says it's been randomly checking passengers' drinks at the gate for about five years. passengers who refuse the check could be banned from boarding flights. firefighters in southern california are making progress battling this fire at angeles national forest northeast of los angeles.

the fire is now 24% contained. firefighters say it could take another week before it's fully contained. the fire has burned 3600 acres in the san gabriel hahn mountains. no communities are threatened. the fire broke out sunday near a kafr ground, forcing them to evacuate during the busy labor day weekend. 400 trees in california will be sacrificed to make room for the space shuttle endeavor. the shuttle will soon make its final journey from los angeles international airport to a science park 12 miles away, but trees are in the way. a cifornia science center is d dis -- says dismanteling the shuttle or airlifting it deems impossible. they're trying to raise power lines and remove traffic signals to make room for the orbiter. they agreed to replant twice as many trees along the route once it's removed. a new study says your morning cup of coffee could help prevent neck and shoulder pain caused by long hours at the

computer. they had a group of people perform a series of computer tasks while me showers the intensity of their pain. while both groups reported discomfort those who consumed coffee before the assignment had significantly less pan than those who do not. men and women do see things differently. researchers at the city university of new york say guys' eyes are more sensitive to small details and moving objects while women are more per acceptive to color changes. they found that men required a slightly longer wavelength of color to experience the same shade as women and men were less able to tell the difference between hues. what would you call the color of my blouse. >> purple. >> i might say it's raspberry. >> when did that become a color. >> what do you think, veronica? >> i think that, you know, you talk about small details, why don't guys ever see the little pieces of trash on the floor. that to me is a small detail.

millions of iphone and ipad id numbers but the fed says this is likely a hoax. it says it hacked 12 million apple device id frz an fbi computer. the numbers are used when you download from itunes. a federal law enforcement official tells nbc news there is no evidence the fbi requested that data from apple. they say a list posted by anti-sec allege led i hacked numbers may be employed to steal that. sex abuse scandal surrounding former penn state coach jerry sandusky has cost the school nearly $17 million. the university posted the expenses related to the case on their website. nearly $10 million has been spent on internal investigations, $4 million on legal fees, and a million more on other costs. $2 million has been spent on defending former president and vice president gary shultz, and athletic director tim curly. sandusky was convicted in june of sexually abusing ten boys over 15 years. he is awaiting sentencing. 5:25.

address the crowd, as is this woman, sandra fluke, the georgetown university law student who made national headlines when rush limbaugh insulted her for supporting a plan to require insurance companies to cover birth control. tomorrow's addresses come after an emotional speech by first lady michelle obama. nbc's tracie potts joins us live now from charlotte with more. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. good morning, everyone. a lot of times these addresses are written by speech writers but aides say these were michelle obama's ideas and her words. she had very specific ideas about what she wanted to say. and she talked about a lot of things, a large part of the beginning of her speech was about her background, her husband's background, their families, the struggles of their families and how that really shaped his outlook on the decisions that he has to make. a large portion of her speech was directed very specifically at women.

congestion, they're adding circulator buses and convert long-term parking spaces to hourly spaces. developers want to turn the chevy chase lake complex to a town center with apartment building, retail, and open space. jones bridge road and east west highway is getting mixed reviews. >> i think it's actually going to be a detriment to the community. we already have so much traffic as it is. it's just going to xser bait it and make it so much worse than it already is. >> the community sees that this is an opportunity for new development. as you can see, you know, there is an opportunity here. i think that we can make this a great gateway to the community. >> the redevelopment is part of a master plan that includes metro's purple line. it would run from chevy chase bethesda to the new carrollton metro station. they still need to approve the plan before the community can be rezoned. 5:37. a developing story out of

i'm angie goff in the newsroom with breaking news. hundreds of afghan soldiers linked to insurgents have been detained or dismissed. this according to the defense ministry. now, those expelled were because of discrepancies in paperwork or missing information. this after an alarming number of, quote, insider, end quote, attacks continue to cause tension between the afghan people and their allies. nato officials have mad strong concern over these attacks recently. if you just look at the numbers, 45 nato force troops, including 15 in the last month alone, have been killed. and keep in mind there were 35 total in all of last year. a spokesman for the defense ministry says president hamid karzai has ordered afghan forces to find ways to stop shethese insider attacks. investigation into these attacks started six months ago and just this past weekend news4 reported that the u.s. suspended training the new recruits of the local

mitt romney's chances of winning in virginia come november could be threatened by another republican. the common wealth's board of elections ruled that virgil jr. is eligible to be on the presidential ballot. a libertarian and a green party candidate were also allowed on. but goud has a long history in virginia politic and even if he earns 2% or 3% in november it could swing the state in president obama's favor. the state republican party challenging his el jilt and has accused him of petition fraud. 5:51. a u.s. congressman from maryland is being hailed a hero after helping a toddler on the side of the road. he saved him on route 50 a week ago. 2-year-old nathan smith's parents say they were forced to pull the car over when they noticed nathan was not breathing and turning blue. harris who is also a medical drr drove past the car and pulled over to help. he loosened the boy's jaw and allowed him to gasp for hair.
